Art & Design in Sri Lanka: Careers, Curriculum & Future Outlook

📘 Overview

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) in Art & Design develops creative, visual and conceptual skills across drawing, painting, design and contemporary visual practice. It is offered at the Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts of the University of Jaffna, where Art & Design has been taught as a discipline since 1999. It suits creatively driven students who want to build a professional foundation in the visual arts and design.

It earns a moderate future-proof score: design skills are increasingly valuable across advertising, digital media and branding, but traditional fine-arts careers offer modest direct employment and the commercial-art space is now being reshaped by generative-AI tools — strong, adaptable portfolios are what keep graduates competitive.

• Principles of design and visual communication
• History and theory of art and design
• Sculpture, printmaking and mixed media
• Graphic and digital design
• Creative project and portfolio development
• Contemporary art practice and exhibition
• A final-year creative project / dissertation
