📘 Overview
A degree in Drama & Theatre trains you as a complete theatre artist — combining hands-on performance skill with the intellectual grounding of theatre history, theory and criticism. It suits creatively driven students who enjoy acting, directing, writing or designing for the stage and screen, and who want a structured path into Sri Lanka’s performing-arts, television and media industries.
It earns a future-proof score of 6.0 because live performance and creative direction are highly resistant to automation, but formal, well-paid openings in Sri Lanka’s arts sector remain limited, so career stability depends heavily on initiative and building a portfolio across stage, screen and digital content.
📚 What You'll Study
The programme blends practical studio work with theoretical study, typically built around two major components — performance practice and theatre scholarship — supported by a range of elective subjects.
- Acting, voice and movement technique
- Theatre history — Sri Lankan, Indian and world traditions
- Playwriting, dramaturgy and script analysis
- Directing and production practice
- Stagecraft, set, lighting and production design
- Ensemble and collaborative performance work
- Drama theory, criticism and research
⏳ Duration
This is typically a four-year full honours degree, with the final years devoted to intensive ensemble and production work that prepares graduates to step straight into professional performance settings.
✅ Entry Requirements
To qualify you must sit the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination and obtain at least two Simple (S) passes in any two subjects, together with at least a Credit (C) pass in the Drama & Theatre subject you wish to follow. Selection also requires a Practical/Aptitude Test conducted by the institute — a candidate who fails this test is deemed ineligible for that course of study, though they may still be considered for other courses listed on their application. At the Swami Vipulananda Institute, the medium of instruction is Tamil.
