📘 Overview
The B.Sc.Eng. Honours in Electronic and Intelligent Systems Engineering (EISE) is a new four-year honours degree from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Peradeniya, designed for students who want to build the intelligent electronics behind modern technology rather than just use it. It blends classical electronic engineering with artificial intelligence and machine learning from the very first year, producing engineers who can design systems that sense, learn, and make decisions. It suits mathematically strong A/L Physical Science students who enjoy both hardware and software and want to work at the cutting edge of AI-driven engineering.
It earns a high future-proof score because electronics is a core enabling technology for AI, and hardware engineers who also understand machine learning are scarce, hard to automate away, and in rising demand across robotics, IoT, telecom, healthcare and energy.
📚 What You'll Study
The curriculum combines a deep engineering foundation with AI embedded throughout, spanning both the theory and hands-on design of intelligent electronic systems. Core areas include:
- ⚡ Electronics and hardware design — circuit theory and system fundamentals
- 🤖 Artificial intelligence and machine learning, introduced from first year
- 📡 Communications, signal processing and telecommunications systems
- 🎛️ Control systems for real-time decision-making and autonomous operation
- 🦾 Robotics and autonomous physical systems
- 🔋 Power and energy systems
- 🩺 Biomedical engineering and healthcare technology
- 🧠 Edge AI — running intelligent models on embedded hardware
- ⚛️ Introductory quantum sciences and emerging computing paradigms
⏳ Duration
The programme runs for four academic years of full-time study, with two 15-week semesters per year, leading to a Bachelor of the Science of Engineering Honours (B.Sc.Eng.Hons.) degree. As a four-year honours engineering degree, it is developed in line with outcome-based education principles associated with IESL accreditation and the Washington Accord framework.
✅ Entry Requirements
Admission is through the GCE Advanced Level examination in the Physical Science stream. You need to pass all three required subjects in a single sitting, each at a minimum grade of S, and then qualify on your Z-score for the engineering intake.
- Physics — minimum grade S
- Chemistry — minimum grade S
- Combined Mathematics — minimum grade S
Final selection also depends on your Z-score, which varies by university and district every year — check your eligibility with the free tool on findmydegree.lk.
