📘 Overview

The Bachelor of Arts is Sri Lanka's largest and most flexible degree, spanning the humanities, social sciences, languages, aesthetic studies and religions & civilisations. Offered at nine universities, it lets students combine several subjects in a general degree or specialise deeply in one through a four-year special (honours) degree. It suits students interested in people, society, language and culture, and who value breadth and choice in what they study.

It earns a middle-of-the-road future-proof score: the BA is broad and adaptable and feeds many sectors, but a general arts degree on its own can face employability challenges in Sri Lanka — outcomes improve markedly with a strong specialisation (such as Economics or English) plus practical skills in English, communication and digital tools.

📚 What You'll Study

Students choose subjects across four “baskets”, then either spread across several or specialise in one:

• Social Sciences / Applied Social Studies — e.g. Economics, Political Science, Geography, Sociology, History
• Religions and Civilisations — e.g. Buddhist, Hindu, Islamic and Christian civilisations
• Aesthetic Studies — e.g. Music, Dance, Drama & Theatre, Art
• Languages — Sinhala, Tamil, English and foreign languages
• A general degree covers several subjects; a special (honours) degree concentrates on one, with a research component

✅ Entry Requirements

To be eligible you need at least ‘S’ grades in three subjects at the G.C.E. Advanced Level, chosen from the Arts-stream subjects, which are organised into four baskets:

• Basket 03 — Aesthetic Studies
• Basket 04 — Languages
