📘 Overview
Medicine (MBBS) is the path to becoming a doctor — the most sought-after and competitive degree in Sri Lanka. The five-year programme builds deep knowledge of the human body and disease, then immerses students in real clinical care in teaching hospitals. It suits dedicated, resilient, people-centred students with top A/L results who are committed to a demanding but deeply respected career in healthcare.
It earns a future-proof score of 9.5 because doctors are always in demand, the profession is essentially recession-proof and globally portable, and the clinical judgement, examination and human care at its core are among the most resistant to automation of any career.
📚 What You'll Study
Across five years (each with three ten-week terms), Phase I covers the normal body and Phase II onward is clinical, taught across around fourteen core subjects.
- Anatomy, physiology and biochemistry (Phase I)
- Pathology, pharmacology, microbiology and parasitology
- Medicine, surgery, paediatrics and obstetrics & gynaecology
- Community medicine and public health
- Forensic medicine and psychiatry
- Clinical clerkships and hospital rotations
- Professional ethics and a research component
⏳ Duration
This is a five-year MBBS degree, followed by a compulsory 12-month internship to gain full registration to practise from the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC). Specialisation is pursued later through postgraduate training (PGIM).
